Barbara A. Ableman, 69, Wausau, died Sunday, August 3, 2008, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Barbara was born March 4, 1939 in Whitewater, Wisconsin to George and Norma (Johnson) Phelps. She grew up in Whitewater, graduating from Whitewater High School and the University of Wisconsin Whitewater where she earned a degree in early childhood education. Upon graduation she held teaching jobs in Appleton, Fort Atkinson, and Wausau.

On June 24, 1961 she married Herbert Ableman, and later left teaching to raise her three children. She was involved with many local organizations including the Junior Women's club, the YWCA, DC Everest Band Parents, PEO, and especially enjoyed being a hospital volunteer. She was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church. One of her greatest pleasures during the past five years was in being a very proud grandmother.

Loved ones surviving include her husband, Herb; son Mark, Boston, Massachusetts; daughters Jill (Jason) Johnson, St. Paul, Minnesota and Laura Oestreicher, Rothschild; granddaughter Kayleigh Oestreicher, Rothschild; her mother Norma Ball, Whitewater; sister Carol (Craig) Cobb, Whitewater; brother Alan (Shoshana) Phelps, Santa Rosa, California; as well as many other dear friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Phelps.

Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant St. Wausau. Rev. Joy Nelson-Jeffers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant St. Wausau, WI 54403, and the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 333 Pine Ridge Blvd. Wausau, WI 54401.
