MONROE - Before you pour a green beer or Guinness to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, be sure to give your car keys to a designated driver or make arrangements for a safe ride home.
Green County Sheriff's deputies and Monroe police are intensifying traffic-safety enforcement March 5 to 21, which includes the St. Patrick's Day weekend, to combat drunken driving and encourage seatbelt use.
The departments announced the stepped-up enforcement this week. The initiative is part of a grant both agencies received from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Safety.
"Although we're trying to increase voluntarily compliance with traffic laws - not to write more tickets or make more arrests - we will take enforcement action if voluntary compliance fails," said Lt. Kari Phillips of the Green County Sheriff's Department in a statement. "We are serious about traffic safety enforcement because far too many needless deaths and serious injuries are due to drunken driving and not wearing safety belts."
