MONROE — A football coach in Dakota has been arrested again on sex abuse charges being investigated by the Stephenson County Sheriff’s office.
According to a statement, police arrested Daniel Sheets, age 37 of Dakota, “without incident” again at a house in the 100 block of S. Elm St. in Davis Junction, Ill., where he lives.
“The apprehension of Daniel Sheets was for a Stephenson County felony arrest warrant issued on 8-16-23 for Child Pornography (5 counts) and Unauthorized Videotaping (5 counts); all of which are alleged to have occurred in July of 2019,” the statement said.
Sheets was initially arrested Aug. 2 following an investigation sparked when an official with the school district filed a report about a teacher/athletic coach thought to have engaged in what was characterized as “inappropriate communications with multiple female students” in October 2021.
Sheets was immediately placed on administrative leave from the school.
Sheets was charged in the first arrest with three counts of Child Pornography and two counts of Unauthorized Videotaping.
Additional charges were filed against Sheets on Thursday, Aug. 9 for nine counts of Child Pornography alleged to have occurred in December 2021. He posted $10,000 bond on that case and was rearrested at home.
The Stephenson County Sheriff said the additional charges where the result of a lengthy investigation has been active since 2019, when the crimes are alleged to have occurred. He faces a maximum potential penalty of 15 years in prison on each felony count.
Sheets is scheduled for an Aug. 31 preliminary hearing on the new charges.
