City library plans holiday events

MONROE - The Monroe Public Library's 16th Annual Tree-Trimming Party will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sat., Nov. 20.

The event is for kids 3 and older and their families. Adults are expected to stay with their children and share the fun.

Each year the library hosts a tree-trimming party and children make ornaments to decorate the tree that stands near Santa's chair. The Ornament Workshop also will be busy as little fingers create tree trims for a "Zoo-Riffic" holiday - Peppermint-Striped Zebras, Holly Jolly Elephants, Spangled Peacocks, Sugarplum Pockets, Dancing Penguins, and Candy Cane Parrots.

Youngsters are asked to make an ornament for Santa's tree and also may take a few home.

Kris Ault, Youth Services Librarian, will present three holiday storytimes throughout the day - at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Before or after each storytime, families can stop at the Cookie Corner Cafe for cookies and punch.

VolunTEEN Elves - middle and high school students - will be on hand to show youngsters how to make the ornaments and guide families to activities.

Ault says she remembers the first Tree-Trimming Party.

"It was a foggy morning and we were sure no one would come," she said. "Then just as we put the finishing touches on the decorations, families began to fill the room. We had about 100 people who turned out to decorate the 'new' library's tree that year, but since then our attendance has averaged about 250."

Ault says she's been told that many families still trim their trees with ornaments from the library party.

"We are looking forward to the new families who join us each year and hope that tradition continues," she said.

Ault estimates that nearly 50 dozen cookies will be needed for the event. Bakers who would like to contribute a few dozen of their favorite holiday treats may stop by the library and fill out a cookie request sheet or call the Youth Services Department at the library. Cookies should be delivered on Thursday or Friday, Nov. 18 or Nov. 19.

The library is at 925 16th Ave. The building is handicapped accessible and parking is available in the lot behind the library; or the municipal parking ramp across the street.
