MONROE - "The Sounds of the Big Bands" will round out the Monroe City Band's 2012 concert season at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 30 at the Twining Park bandshell.

The free concert will be hosted by local radio personality Bill Korst, and Michelle Duvall will serve as guest vocalist. The concert is open to the public. Seating is provided or attendees may bring lawn chairs or blankets.

The program will feature the music of performers and composers whose music has spanned the decades to remain part of the nation's "songbook." Tunes written by Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen and the Gershwins will share the stage with the songs as they were performed by Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, and Woody Herman, among others. Korst will lend his insight along the way.

The Monroe City Band operates under the Monroe Parks And Recreation, and this concert marks the last concert of its outdoor season. The band will also perform during Cheese Days and present a Christmas concert early in December. The late Alan F. Barnard originated this version of the City Band in 1949, providing musical entertainment to the community.

Randy Schneeberger directs the group.
