MONROE - Monroe School District Superintendent Larry Brown had his final school board meeting on Monday.

The Monroe School Board commended Brown on his five years of service, and they had a cake to honor him.

"I have been trying to avoid these emotions," Brown said. "It's always tough to leave anywhere. My plan was to finish here. Opportunities happen and family is a part of it."

Brown accepted the superintendent position in the Rice Lake Area School District in February. His resignation from Monroe will become effective June 30. Cory Hirsbrunner takes over as superintendent July 1.

In other action, the school board:

n Hired Sara Latimer as the principal at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy.

n Hired Nathan Brown as a fourth grade teacher at Northside Elementary School. Hired Lisa Moon as a 0.4 full-time equivalent speech and language pathologist and hired Terry Faith as a 0.4 full-time equivalent speech and language pathologist.

n Hired Jennifer Bochart as a Monroe High School library specialist. Hired Flo Koller as an ELL translator.

n Approved the resignations of Patti Burandt, charter school teacher, and Andrew Eastlick, high school business education teacher.

n Honored Monroe Business Manager Ron Olson with the Lamp of Learning Staff Excellence award.

n Monroe Athletic Director Dave Hirsbrunner gave a spring sports update. Monroe finished on average in sixth place out of all the spring sports in the Badger South Conference. Hirsbrunner highlighted baseball, golf, softball, boys track, girls track and tennis. Hirsbrunner updated the board on each team's seasons and accomplishments, and he also presented participation numbers and compared them to last year. There were 587 students who participated in sports, or 84 percent. However, Hirsbrunner said students that participated in more than one sport were counted more than once.
