Hughes slated to start new position at end of March

BRODHEAD - A new police chief could be headed to Brodhead, if he passes a background investigation and a physical.

Out of 12 initial applicants, Christopher Hughes was chosen by a six-member ad hoc committee to potentially take on the role of Brodhead Police Chief, according to Brodhead Alderman John Bernstein.

"The council unanimously approved his hiring pending all the formal matters," Bernstein said. That approval came Feb. 17.

Bernstein said Hughes is a former police chief of Cottage Grove. That department disbanded and merged with the Dane County Sheriff's Department and formed the smaller Village of Cottage Grove Police Department. Bernstein said he expects the background investigation and physical to be finished by mid March and Hughes will take on the seat vacated by former chief Thomas Moczynksi at the end of March.

Moczynski took the deputy chief position at the Green County Sheriff's Department in October. Moczynski worked for the Brodhead police for more than eight years and has a combined 22 years of law enforcement experience.
