MONROE - Reconstruction of the Square and six side streets could cost more than $5 million if the highest bidder - a Monroe company - is chosen.
The general contractor for the reconstruction project on Monroe's downtown could be named as soon as Tuesday at the City of Monroe Common Council meeting.
City department heads and representatives from Fehr-Graham and Associates met to open bids at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the council room of City Hall. Dr. David Riese, chairman of Monroe Main Street Board of Directors, and several contractors attended to hear the results as Fehr-Graham associates opened and recorded the bids.
Only four bid packages came in, with bids on two portions of the project - a base bid reflecting the major portion of the Square, and an alternate bid reflecting work on six side streets just off the Square. All four contractors had submitted bid bonds.
The bid packages, in order as opened, were:
Parisi Construction Co., Inc., 508 S. Nine Mound Rd., Verona.
Base bid: $3,580,791; Alternate bid: $687,021 (Total: $4.2 million)
Portzen Construction, 205 Stone Valley Drive, Dubuque, Iowa.
Base bid: $2,551,155; Alternate bid: $708,246 (Total: $3.3 million)
Tricon Construction Group, 902 17th Ave., Monroe.
Base bid: $4,011,265; Alternate bid: $1,014,109 (Total: $5.0 million)
E & N Hughes Company, Inc., N2629 Coplien Rd., Monroe.
Base bid: $2,308,214; Alternate bid: $599,922 (Total: $2.9 million)
Fehr-Graham & Associates will review the bids to verify the numbers.
The bids will be presented under Public Works Director Kelly Finkenbinder at the Board of Public Works meeting Monday.
The Board's recommendation will be sent to Common Council for a vote on Tuesday.
Construction work will start on the northeast corner of the square in about two to three weeks.
