MONROE - April 7-11 is National Work Zone Awareness Week.
Last year in Wisconsin, there were about 1,700 crashes in work zones. In those accidents, 11 people were killed and 847 were injured. All of the injured and killed were motorists.
Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil said it's critical for drivers to observe road signs that warn them of changing road conditions.
He said it's also important to be aware of the signs to protect workers' safety.
Local highway workers tell stories of motorists speeding by them at high speeds when they're out on the roads making repairs.
Wisconsin has a "Move Over" law that requires drivers to slow down or change lanes when they see maintenance, utility or emergency vehicles ahead.
The law is designed to provide safety margins for workers. Motorists can be fined $249 for failure to move over.
Motorists are also reminded that fines double in work zones.
Fines range from $198 to as much as $299 for driving more than 20 mph over the speed limit in a work zone.
