MADISON - Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, Friday warned people of a new scam aimed at defrauding people.
Baldwin said some people are using the economic stimulus package to take advantage of people. There are two new scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
The first is a Web site that tells people it can help them get money from the stimulus. Some of the Web sites use deceptive names or images of President Barack Obama. Some of the sites also offer a list of government grants and say people can apply for them if they pay upfront.
The other are e-mails that ask for bank account information so that stimulus funds can be automatically deposited .
Baldwin reminds people that the government does not charge people to apply for federal grants, nor does it ask for your bank account information by e-mail or telephone.
"I'm very concerned that people may be duped by scams that are popping up all over the Internet. It's more important than ever to guard your personal information from con artists who see the stimulus plan as another opportunity to steal your money, your identity, or both," Baldwin said.
