MONROE — A 63-year-old Monroe man is in critical condition following a two-vehicle crash early Wednesday, Dec. 9 near Brodhead, just across the county line in Rock County.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 6 a.m. to Wisconsin 81 and County T, Town of Avon. Green County deputies, Brodhead police and the Brodhead and Orfordville fire and EMS departments also responded.

A Chevrolet Captiva compact SUV, driven by 33-year-old Andrew Coffell of Roscoe, Illinois, was northbound on County T when he failed to stop at the intersection and collided with the passenger side of an eastbound Infiniti, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Office.

Both vehicles continued through the intersection and came to rest in the ditch on the northeast side of the intersection. The Captiva was at one point on fire.

The driver of the Infiniti, 63-year-old Allen Esser of Monroe, was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated.

Coffell managed to get out before the vehicle caught fire but he sustained "significant injuries," the sheriff's office reported. Esser was reported to be in critical condition from his injuries.

Both drivers were taken to the Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville.
