DARLINGTON - Seven people were injured, with two requiring helicopter transport, when the buggy they were traveling in was struck by a pickup truck Sunday afternoon in Darlington Township.
An Amish buggy driven by Elam Stoltzfus, 36, rural Argyle, was traveling east on Wisconsin 81 when it was struck from behind by a 2008 Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck, being operated by Richard E. Larson, 79, of rural South Wayne. The horse and buggy were pushed into the south ditch, ejecting all occupants. Besides Stoltzfus, the buggy contained his wife Susie Stoltzfus, 34, as well as their five small children, according to a news release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's department was notified of the accident at 2:12 p.m. It occurred in the 13000 block of Wis. 81.
All seven members of the Stoltzfus Family were transported to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County by Rural Medical Ambulance Service with injuries ranging from very severe to very minor. Two patients were later transported via Air Care of Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, and React of Rockford to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Larson was checked out at the scene by Argyle EMS and declined transport, reporting no injuries.
Lafayette County Sheriff's deputies, Darlington Police Department, Rural Medical Ambulances and the Darlington Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. They were assisted at the scene by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin State Patrol, Argyle EMS, Lafayette County Highway Department, Center Hill Veterinary Service and several helpful citizens, the release said.
The crash remains under further investigation.
