2 injured in ATV crash

A silver 2005 Kawasaki Brute Force 750 was one of the vehicles stolen from Mike's Engine Works over the weekend in Darlington.

JO DAVIESS COUNTY, Illinois — Two backseat passengers on an ATV were injured when the driver lost control of the vehicle at the stateline near Warren on the night of May 30, according to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

Travis E. Near, 23, Warren, was airlifted by REACT helicopter to the Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, while Nicole A. Deyo, 30, Apple River, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington.

The driver, Richard A. Kent, 28, Warren, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, operating an ATV on a roadway and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He and his front-seat passenger, Kirstin R. Gierhart, 24, Warren, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Kent lost control of the four-seater 2020 Can-Am ATV on a sharp curve in the gravel roadway of North Bellevue Street near South Holland Road shortly before 10:30 p.m. The ATV traveled about 30 yards into a crop field and rolled onto its top.
