TOWN OF MONROE - One person was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Wisconsin 69 just south of County FF in the town of Monroe.

Initial investigation indicates a northbound vehicle with a single occupant crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a second vehicle occupied by two individuals at about 4 p.m. All three people had to be extricated from the vehicles.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 56-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene by Green County Deputy Coroner Jody Makos.

The driver and a front-seat passenger of the second vehicle, both female, were seriously injured and taken by Medflight to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, one at the scene of the crash and another at Monroe Clinic.

"Their condition at this time is not known, but judging by the severity of the injuries, their (condition is) tenuous," Sheriff Mark Rohloff said Monday night.

Rohloff said it will likely "take a long period of time" before the department receives collision data from Wisconsin State Patrol accident reconstruction team.

"We don't have an idea of how the accident was caused, other than for some unknown reason the northbound vehicle crossed into the southbound lane," he said. "It's unknown if there was a medical reason or not."

As of Monday night, the names of those involved in the accident were being withheld pending notification of families.

Wis. 69 south of County FF to County DR was closed for about four hours.

Monroe Police Department, Monroe Fire Department, Monticello Fire Department, Juda Fire Department, Green County EMS and Green County deputies assisted at the scene.
