Walter John Urben was born Feb. 7, 1905, in Monticello, the only child of John and Euphemia Urben of Monticello. His father, John, was a partner in the Ed. Wittwer wholesale cheese business. Walter was a graduate of Monticello High School and, in 1930, from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He was director of the division of mental hygiene of the Wisconsin State Department of Public Welfare and in 1948 he was appointed superintendent of Mendota State hospital where he served until retirement in 1970.
