Council Discussion The council discussed the pros and cons of fluoridation in the public water system: Miller: With an engineering background, he considers all avenues regarding fluoridation. Grenzow: Expressed concern over the rapid timeline and public demand to eliminate fluoridation. Kranig: Inquired about the fluoride vendor and emphasized the need for consumer choice regarding water content. Thoman: Warned against a narrow focus on dental health without considering potential broader impacts. Advocated for giving residents a choice. Schaffer: Stressed reliance on experts and the importance of continuing fluoridation due to care from outgoing professionals. Wartenwieler: Acknowledged the need for balanced information and suggested pausing fluoridation until further studies are conducted. Kleven: Thanked speakers for their input and raised concerns about health impacts from ingested fluoridation, advocating for further research and a halt on fluoridation. Treuthardt: Supported the science behind fluoridation, emphasizing its benefits for children in the community. Knoll: Thanked attendees and expressed a desire to keep fluoride out of the water, suggesting the council should refrain from voting. Grenzow: Argued that providing choice could be seen as limiting options for those who want fluoridation. Legal Perspective Attorney Bartholf clarified that the matter does not qualify for a referendum. A motion was made by Kranig, seconded by Thoman, to Approve repealing the fluoridation of the City of Monroe's public water supply. Additionally, it was proposed that the Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee review the necessary ordinance changes.. Kranig: Suggested increasing the base rate while keeping the rates for seniors and individuals with disabilities unchanged. Requested data on the number of riders. Knoll: Supported maintaining the current fees for seniors and individuals with disabilities while raising the base rate. Wartenwieler: Agreed with keeping the elderly/disabled fees as they are and increasing the base rate. Grenzow: Recommended reviewing the rates every two years. Treuthardt: Supported the idea of a biennial review. Kranig/Knoll: Proposed a modest increase of $0.25 every two years for seniors and individuals with disabilities, based on a new base rate of $4.25, with a review scheduled every two years. Tom also expressed support for this approach. 3. Resolution Approving the Sole Bid for Shared Ride Taxi Program Contract from 2025-2026 with optional years through 2029 A motion was made by Kranig, seconded by Thoman, to Approve the resolution.
