Facility Where Discharge Occurs: Chalet Cheese Cooperative, N4858 County Highway N (NW1/4, NW1/4, SEC 3 T2N R7E) Receiving Water And Location: Groundwaters of the Sugar-Pecatonica River Basin. Spray Irrigation Fields, N ½ & SE ¼ of the NE ¼ of Section 4, T2N, R7E. Town of Monroe. Brief Facility Description and Summary of Proposed Changes: Chalet Cheese Cooperative operates a cheese factory producing Baby Swiss, Brick, Limburger and German style Brick cheese in Monroe, WI. Approximately 3.3 MG/year of untreated dairy wastewater is generated through the cheese making and clean up processes. Wastewater is sent to a 59-acre spray irrigation system located across from the factory. The spray irrigation system consists of one 60-foot long soaker hose that applies wastewater directly to the ground surface to reduce the potential for phage in the cheese factory. The spray irrigation treatment system consists of perennial grasses and is segmented into four zones: Zone A - East side area near Hwy N with 6-12% slopes (10.5 acres); Zone B - hilltop central areas with 0-6% slopes (10.0 acres); Zone C - areas down-slope from the hilltop with 6-12% slopes (24.5 acres); Zone D - areas to the east, northwest and south with 12-20% slopes (13.6 acres). The spray irrigation system operates five days a week year-round. There is no groundwater monitoring system surrounding the spray irrigation system. There have been increases to sample frequencies for Land Treatment effluent monitoring parameters. An annual total limit for chloride has been added to the permit and will become effective starting in 2029. Land Application monitoring for the following parameters has been added: Phosphorus; Total Solids; Phosphorus, Water Extractable; Potassium, Total Recoverable.
