MONROE - The Youth Services Department of the Monroe Public Library invites students entering kindergarten through fifth grade to share some reading fun with friends this summer by joining one of the library's book clubs for children. Programs at the Monroe Public Library are open to children of all abilities. Young readers who are not yet reading independently may read the book with an adult or listen to the book on tape or CD.

Three book club levels will be offered to elementary school readers. Books for each reading level and discussion guides are available now for each title. Each Book Club meeting will include a discussion of the story, activities, and a snack or craft.

The Easy Reader Book Club for children entering kindergarten and first grade will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, to discuss Robert McCloskey's book, "Blueberries for Sal." The Caldecott Award-winning story relates the adventures of a small child and a bear cub who wander away from their mothers while gathering blueberries.

Students entering second and third grades may join the Junior Reader Book Club discussion at 1:30 p.m. on July 17. This group will read "Prairie School" by Avi. The main character in this chapter book is 9-year-old Noah who lives with his family in a sod house on the prairie. Noah is not happy when he is told that his aunt is coming from the East to teach him to read and he thinks of all sorts of ways to "skip" school.

The Library Lover Book Club for students entering fourth and fifth grades will read "Rabbit Hill" by Robert Lawson. This Newberry Medal title tells the story of Little Georgie rabbit, the first of the animals on the Hill to learn the news that new Folks are coming to the Big House. Will the new Folks be planting folks or will they bring dogs, traps and guns as Uncle Analdas predicts?

The Monroe Public Library is located at 925 16th Ave. in Monroe. The building is handicapped accessible and parking is located behind the building or in the municipal parking ramp across the street.
