FREEPORT — In celebration of International Museum Day on Sunday, May 18, the Greater Freeport Partnership invites residents and visitors to explore the rich heritage, art, and playfulness of Stephenson County through its distinctive local museums. This year’s celebration offers a chance to discover hidden gems and honor the institutions preserving the region’s stories and culture.
Participating Museums:
● Cedarville Area Historical Society (450 2nd Street, Cedarville) will be open 1-4 p.m. highlighting Jane Addams exhibits as well as hosting a representative from the Stephenson County Genealogical Society.
● German Valley Historical Society Museum (805 Church Street, German Valley) will be open from 1-4 p.m. featuring the former Beuth home along with a representative from the Stephenson County Genealogical Society.
● Lena Area Historical Society (427 West Grove Street, Lena) will be open from 1-4 p.m. with to view current displays as well as a new exhibit, Lena Photo Postcard Display.
● McConnell Area Historical Society (202 W Main Street, McConnell) will open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature local advertising memorabilia.
● Pearl City Historical Organization will soon open in their new location at 126 South Main Street, Pearl City. Stop by in August to check out their great space!
● Rock Run Country Historical Society Museum (201 N Main, Rock City) will be open 1-4 p.m. highlighting Main Street businesses through the years in Davis, Dakota, Rock Grove and Rock City.
● Silver Creek Museum (2954 S. Walnut Road, Freeport) will be open from 1-4 p.m. with 28 rooms of history.
● Stephenson County Historical Society (1400 S Carroll Avenue, Freeport) will open noon to 4 p.m. for tours of the many buildings and grounds and the gift shop will be open as well.
● Winslow Historical Society and Museum (606 Bridge Street, Winslow) will open 1-4 p.m. with an array of local memorabilia including photos of local historic buildings.
From local history to industry, childhood wonder to local legacy, Stephenson County’s museums offer something for everyone.
