MONROE - The Prairie Enthusiasts will offer two free events to the public to celebrate its first Prairie Days on Sunday, Sept. 8.

At 9 a.m. Ralph Henry will lead a bicycle ride on the Badger State Trail starting from Honey Creek Park, Monroe, to the Mile 13 Prairie. Riders can either return the seven miles to Monroe or continue on the trail to Stewart Tunnel, between Monticello and Belleville. Round trip from Monroe is 35 miles. A state trail sticker is required.

A carpool will leave Honey Creek Park at 1 p.m. to head to Butenhoff Prairie. The group will collect seeds, and John Ochsner, Tom Fey and Tom Mitchell will read passages from "Rudy's Hill," a memoir written by M.C. Elmer when he was 100 years old in 1986. Elmer was a college professor who grew up in Dutch Hollow and tramped these same hills in the late 1800s. The hill prairie is now owned by The Prairie Enthusiasts.
