Pesticide training set for Feb. 18

MONROE - All farmers and their employees who load, mix, handle or apply "restricted-use" pesticides must complete a pesticide applicator training course and pass a written exam every five years. There is a $30 fee for materials per private applicator. Applicators receive a training manual and study guide to help them prepare for the training session and evaluation.

An exam must be taken after completing the classroom session or after a self study course at home. Successful completion (50 percent if attending the class; 70 percent independent study) of either will satisfy the requirement for certification or re-certification. Those farmers with certifications that have expired before the 2009 cropping season should have received a letter from the Department of Agriculture in early December of 2008.

One training session will be held for Green County farmers in 2009. Certification will expire before the 2009 crop season for approximately 40 producers in the county that will need to be re-certified. Farmers have the option to either take the six hour class before writing the exam or choose to do the independent study option where they study at home and then come in to take the exam. Private applicators are required to achieve a higher score on the exam if they choose to do the self study option.

The training session is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18 and the test only session for those doing the independent study option is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. Both of the sessions will be held in the auditorium of the Government Services Building, Monroe.

Pre-registration is required prior to the session to review the training materials. For more information, contact the UW-Extension Office at (608) 328-9440.
