MONROE - The 2014-15 VFW Patriot's Pen Essay Contest has been announced and will be held at local schools. This is the 16th year the contest has been held by Cecil Jones VFW Post 2312.
The theme of the competition is "Why I Appreciate America's Veterans." The contest is open to all students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Entries are due no later than Nov. 1.
Home-schooled students and youth groups such as Scouts, 4-H, FFA and church youth groups can participate as well.
There will be 10 awards presented by the Post. First place will be a $100 cash prize. Nine other prizes include cash awards of $75, $50, $37.50 and $25.
The post will advance its first-place winner to district competition, where the first place prize is $100. Higher levels of competition include state level and national, where the first place prizes are $500 and $5,000 respectively.
