Park and Rec has openings for summer programs

MONROE - Monroe Park and Recreation is offering several programs this summer for children 3 to 5 years old.

Tot Lot is a class for 3- to 5-year-olds that includes songs, crafts, games, stories and playground activities. Sessions will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Northeast Park. All children participating must be toilet-trained. The June session is full, but there are openings in the July session that runs from July 10-27. Each session is $70 for residents and $80 for non-residents and is limited to 20 children per session. The instructors are Kirsten Vetterli, Ben Latimer, Lauren Hlubek and Lexi Hilliard.

Friday-only Tot Lot is offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 9 through July 21 at Northeast Park, with no Tot Lot June 30. The cost is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. It is limited to 20 children per session.

Summer dance classes will be Mondays, June 19 through Aug. 7, with no class July 3, at Behring Senior Center. Three classes will be held: Ballet I (3- and 4- year-olds) from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. and Ballet III (6 years and up advanced) from 6:25 to 6:55 p.m.; the Ballet II class (4- and 5-year-olds) is full. The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents. The instructors will be Kajen Medenwaldt and Sadie Szabelski.

Parent and child swimming instruction for children 6 months to 4 years old will be held Mondays through Fridays from noon to 12:30 p.m. July 24-28 at the outdoor pool. A parent/guardian must be with each child. The cost is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.

Preschool Aqua swim lessons will be offered for 3- to 5-year-olds at the outdoor pool. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Aqua swim lessons are for children who do not fear the water and will work with a swim instructor on learning how to submerge themselves. These classes are for children who are comfortable without their parents in the water with them. Classes are Mondays through Thursdays with Fridays reserved for make-up sessions in case of inclement weather. There are two sessions based on age: Skippers 1 and Skippers 2.

Skippers 1 is for ages 3 and 4 and will meet Mondays through Thursdays from noon to 12:30 p.m. June 12-22 and July 10-20. The objective of Skippers 1 is to focus on water adjustment, safety and basic swimming skills. Skills learned will be to submerge mouth, nose and eyes, water entries and exits and water safety.

Skippers 2 is for ages 4 and 5 and will meet Mondays through Thursdays from noon to 12:30 p.m. June 26 through July 6 and July 31 through Aug. 10. There will be no class July 4. The prerequisite is that the child must have passed Skippers 1. The objective of Skippers 2 is to begin development of fundamental swimming skills. Skills learned will be to submerge the entire head, perform assisted kicking on front and back and float on front and back without support.
