New Glarus students take part in Battle of the Books

NEW GLARUS - Battle of the Books is a competition that encourages students in third grade through high school to read high-quality books, collaborate on teams and engage in friendly competition.

Student teams, consisting of three or four students, read 20 books between them. They answer questions in this form: "In which book ___?" For a favorite Swiss story, the question might be: "In which book does a girl live with her grandfather?" The response is the title and author ("Heidi" by Johanna Spyri).

The 20 books span a wide range of genres, from mysteries to nonfiction to fantasies to picture books. This year, there were 199 participants, 152 students and 47 teachers, in the New Glarus school district.

Local competitions identified champions for the elementary division grades three and four; elementary division grade five; middle school division; and the senior division. The middle school and elementary divisions competed in modified double-elimination brackets (Sweet 16 for the middle school, Elite Eight for the elementary school).

The champions for the four divisions competed in a statewide online division. The New Glarus senior division champions (Samantha Burgess, Dee Delforge, Jada Malaise and Kortney Peterson) were 17th in a field of 60 teams statewide.

The New Glarus middle school division champions (Ellie Eichelkraut, Georgia Jones, Riley O'Flanagan and Sydney O'Flanagan) were ninth in a field of 147.

The fifth-grade New Glarus elementary division champions (Evelyn Bedward, Roman Kendrick, Karson Wenger and Ebonee Przekurat) placed 161 of 192 teams statewide.

The third- and fourth-grade New Glarus elementary division champions (Camryn Arnett, Hannah Boldebuck, Annabelle Smith and Elizabeth Smith) placed 91 of 192 teams statewide.

The students worked hard to prepare, and read a variety of books, paying attention to detail and memorizing title/author pairs. Almost all Battle of the Books participants said that they read at least one book they otherwise would not have read. The New Glarus School District's Parent-Teacher Organization supported the event with funds to provide T-shirts to participants. The New Glarus Public Library also participated and provided logistical support.
