New Glarus: Roadside cleanup is April 19-26

NEW GLARUS - The Town of New Glarus Parks Commission has selected the week of April 19-26 for community roadside clean up. Parks members are seeking the assistance of family, student and service group volunteers to join them from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 26, for a cooperative effort workday. In addition, neighbors are encouraged to contact each other to work together during the week to pick up refuse along their own roadside areas. Many rural residents patrol the roads near their own property. However, there are many areas that could benefit from a clean up of cans, paper, broken glass, etc.

The Town Garage staff has identified Legler Road as needing attention again this year, as well as Kubly and Durst Roads plus the end of Hustad Valley Road by Primrose.

Thanks to the generosity of Culvers, tokens for ice cream will be provided to volunteers. Volunteers should be at least 14 years of age, wear gloves, hard-soled, closed-toe shoes and brightly colored clothing that protects arms and legs. Drinking water and safety vests will be available as well as garbage bags, donated by True Value Hardware. Aluminum containers can be collected separately so that participants may donate them to the organization of their choice for fund-raising.

Volunteers are requested to contact Parks Commission members Pete Shaffer or Rita Mahoney prior to April 26 for advance planning. Shaffer can be reached at (608) 220-1154 daytime and 527-4527 evening. Mahoney can be reached at 527-4939.

Volunteers should plan to meet at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, in the Town Hall parking lot, located at the Swiss Miss Center on Wisconsin 69, for supplies, car-pooling and location assignments.
