MADISON - The National Alliance on Mental Illness 2016 NAMI Walk will be at noon Sunday at Olin Turville Park in Madison. A local group, Trevor's Team from NAMI Green County, will participate.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the 5K walk begins at noon.
Trevor's Team was formed in 2009 by his mother, Conni Bigler, who serves on the board of directors of NAMI Green County. Her son had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his late teens and his suicide on Oct. 8, 2007, after a long period of depression, prompted her to form a team of his family and friends. Many of them have walked every year, and have since married and now bring their children. NAMI Dane County has sponsored the event for the last 10 years and Trevor's Team works with those members on a shared-revenue basis.
Every year, one in five adults experiences mental illness problems and 50 percent of chronic mental illness begins by age 14.
Mental Illness Awareness Week is Oct. 2 to 8. The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding is Oct. 4.
