MONROE - Tommy Butts, a member of the Browntown Busy Beavers 4-H club and senior at Black Hawk High School, has won the Green County 4-H Crowley Leadership Award for 2007-08, while Theresa Wyss, member of the Clarno 4-H club and a senior at Monroe High School was first runner up. Both youth will represent Green County for the state award that will be announced later this summer during the Wisconsin State Fair.

As a county winner, Butts received a commemorative engraved medallion and the chance to compete for state-level awards, including a partial scholarship to attend the National Dairy Conference in Madison in October just prior to World Dairy Expo. The state competition will consist of interviews conducted during the Wisconsin State Fair in August 2008. Wyss will also take part in the interview process in hopes to earn an opportunity to attend the event also.

According to Ted Halbach, University of Wisconsin-Madison/Extension Dairy Youth Specialist, the Crowley Award is one of Wisconsin's more prestigious awards. "Past recipients read like a Who's Who of Wisconsin 4-H," he said.

Butts, a 10 year member of 4-H and the dairy project, was selected for his outstanding accomplishments in his local school, community and dairy related activities. He has exhibited Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss cattle throughout his years in 4-H. He currently works on a neighbor's dairy farm and helps with milking, fieldwork and farm chores and also does what he can to promote dairy to the Green County Community.

Wyss, daughter of Randall and Pam Wyss, Monroe, has also been very active in many dairy activities and organizations both local and statewide. Wyss enjoys helping her family on their 70 cow registered Holstein farm with her two sisters.

The James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund sponsor this 4-H dairy award program. James W. Crowley was a longtime UW-Extension dairy specialist and strong supporter of dairy youth project work.
