Monroe students win art contest

MONROE - The Monroe Woman's Club announced the winners of the Helen Mears Art Contest for grades seven and eight. The Monroe winners' artwork was sent on to the Southern Prairie District where district winners were selected.

The top three honors in the 2D-Painting and Drawing category went to eighth-graders: First place went to Colton Grunder for "Sophia," second place to Grace Saunders for "Mermaid" and third place to William Meyer for "Santana." Honorable mention went to Cailey Calvagna, also in eighth grade, for "The Master" and to Jaida Meier, seventh grade, for "Tribal."

In the 3D-Sculpture category, first place went to Maha Mustafa, eighth grade, for her sculpture "Day of the Dead," second place went to Calvagna for "The Guardian" and third place went to Grant Buol, eighth grade, for "Canon."

Honorable mention went to Lizzie Snider, seventh grade, for "Homer" and to Saunders for "Queen Sugar Skull."

At the 2016 Southern Prairies District Convention, three winners from Monroe were chosen: For sculpture, honorable mention went to Snider; for painting, honorable mention went to Meier, and Grunder received third place.
