Monroe: Recruits for Green County Leaders sought

MONROE - What makes a leader? Is it personality, skill, knowledge or charisma? Are leaders just born or are they made - honed with knowledge and practice to reach their full potential?

Green County Leaders believes that leaders are made. It takes skill and knowledge and challenge to bring the seed of leadership to full fruition. And it takes practice too.

Green County Leaders is a program that was developed to ensure that Green County would have the leaders in business, industry and government it would need to face the challenges of today and the future. Through the encouragement of Richard B. Schmied and others, the program began its first class in 2002. The program is now beginning its seventh year. Anyone interested in the program can fill out an application, which is due by July 24. The orientation session will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27.

GCL's mission is to provide an educational program where individuals can practice leadership skills, deepen their understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles, thereby creating a network of individuals committed to the future of Green County. The program consists of an orientation, nine (9) classes and a graduation banquet. Classes are held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month from September through May, and focus on leadership skills and on issues Green County communities and residents are or will be facing in the future.

Green County Leaders is made possible through a partnership of the Green County Development Corporation, Green County UW-Extension, the Monroe Campus of Blackhawk Technical College, and other area organizations and businesses that donate their time by serving on program committees and as session speakers. Program advisors are GCDC Executive Director Anna Schramke, Community Leader Kent Anderson and the Green County UW-Extension Community Development Educator.

More than 120 people in the Green County area have graduated from the program since that first class in 2002. Enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students each year.

Recruitment for the class of 2008-2009 is starting. Brochures and applications for the program are available at the GCDC office or the Green County UW-Extension office, both located in the Government Services Building at the Pleasant View Complex in Monroe. Applications must be returned to the GCDC office by July 24.

More information, a brochure and/or an application are available by contacting GCDC's office by phone at (608) 328-9452, by e-mail gcdc@tds.net or go to at http://green.uwex.edu/cnred/leaders.html.
