Dan Landis, Monroe, was awarded the Wisconsin Wastewater Operators' Association George F. Bernauer Award during the WWOA Conference the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Stevens Point.

The organization's Bernauer Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in their overall activities relating to the wastewater treatment field. The WWOA noted Landis' exemplary leadership in developing operational innovations and excellent track record in environmental compliance.

Landis (Class of '64), a chemical engineer by training, worked for 30 years at the state's two largest wastewater treatment facilities serving the metropolitan Milwaukee area under the auspices of Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). Landis started his career as a process engineer working his way up to Operations Director with oversight for all operations at both plants including bio-solids (Milorganite), permit compliance, and wastewater treatment.

Landis' career includes a stint as a senior Air Force officer after his graduation from University of Wisconsin-Madison and prior to beginning his career in wastewater management. He recently retired from Veolia Water Milwaukee LLC, which, on behalf of MMSD, operates and maintains Jones Island and South Shore water reclamation facilities which provide wastewater treatment for 28 communities and more than 1 million people in southeast Wisconsin.
