MONROE - Two homes will be built this year by Habitat for Humanity of Green County in Browntown, and "partner families" are being sought.
Habitat for Humanity is in search of future new homeowners! Thanks to a very generous grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans through its Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity program and another substantial gift from Charlie Workman's family and friends, HFHGC is in a position to build two homes this year.
Habitat for Humanity does not give away houses. It gives low income families a "hand-up" by assisting those who might not otherwise be able to own a home. The Habitat homes in Browntown will be built at a substantial discount with donated materials and volunteer labor, and they will be sold using interest-free financing, which often results in monthly mortgage payments that are less than rent.
Habitat has three main requirements for "partner families:"
Their current housing must be substandard, i.e., ill-maintained or too small for the family.
They must have enough steady income to pay for their new Habitat house along with their other bills and living expenses.
They must show their willingness to "partner" with Habitat, putting in 250 hours of "sweat equity" per each adult member on their new home or other projects as needed.
If your family, or a family you know, is in need of decent, affordable housing, they should plan to attend one of Habitat's informational meetings to learn more and to obtain an application. The informational meetings will be held:
7 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 28 at the Monroe Public Library, second floor meeting room, 925 16th Ave., Monroe;
7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 31 at Peace United Church, 312 E. South Street in Browntown.
Any one unable to attend one of these meetings, who would like to be considered for these current Browntown homes, may contact Habitat for Humanity of Green County at 329-4024, and leave your name, phone number and reason for calling. The deadline for submitting a completed application is February 8..
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. People from all walks of life are invited to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need. Using donated money and materials, and volunteer labor, the purpose is to build and sell homes at no profit and no interest to families who could not otherwise afford a home.
HFHGC is pledged to the letter and spirit of the U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity. HFHGC will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, age, national origin, color, sex, marital status, sexual orientation or source of income.
