MONROE - The Spring Cover Crop Field Day will run from 10 a.m. to noon April 18 at N1393 Clarno Road, about two miles south of Monroe. From Wisconsin 69, go east on Melvin Road and then south on Clarno Road, or east on Town Center Road and north on Clarno Road.
The rains in February were a wake-up call to many about the need to protect the soil when it's vulnerable.
Many crop fields are riddled with rills and gullies from those rains, including the site of the cover crop field day.
There will be discussion about which cover crops were planted on the site and whether they were a success or not. Jamie Patton from the University of Wisconsin Nutrient and Pest Management Program will explain features in the soil pit. She also will talk about things farmers can do to protect their soils from these "untimely rains" and make soil more resilient to heavy rains and drought.
The field day is hosted by Tom, Dave and Ed McGuire of McGuire and Sons Farm in a field that was taken for corn silage and planted to a variety of cover crops last fall. The seed was provided by AgTech in Stockton.
This event is open to the public. For more information, contact Tonya Gratz with the Green County Land and Water Conservation Department at 325-4195 ext. 121.
