MONROE — The Green County Master Gardeners will hold their monthly tour at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 starting at the Brodhead Memorial Public Library, 1207 25th St., Brodhead.
Green County Master Gardener Paul Roemer will be the host at this event. Paul will explore the process of restoring a native landscape at the Brodhead Memorial Public Library and in the M.J. Blackford Brodhead School Arboretum. Various processes of establishing and managing the nearly 50 year old arboretum will be discussed.
The arboretum is set on two acres of school land and was established in 1969 when the first plantings of trees were completed. Marjorie Blackford led firth grade paper drives, science fairs, bake sales, card sales and candy sales to raise money for the arboretum along with other gifts and memorials. New plantings were watered by fifth grade students under Blackford’s supervision using buckets and a hand pump. Since then, a log cabin has been added with an electric pump and pressure tank. Additional trees and shrubs, as well as Wisconsin prairie plants have been added to the area. Anyone interested in horticulture and gardening can join the tour or the association. You do not have to be a Master Gardener to be a member. For more information on the UW-Extension Master Gardener program contact the Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension at 608-328-9440.
