Main Street plans more LIVE sales, initiatives

MONROE — Main Street Monroe announced July 15 that total sales from its Share the Love gift certificate program that started in March have totaled $30,475 while LIVE! sales so far are at $38,671. Both initiatives were in response to the governor’s order that nonessential businesses had to close. Main Street covered all processing and promotional fees, so the nearly $70,000 went directly to the merchants.

An online shopping portal was set up so people could purchase gift certificates. Main Street then emailed them out, and stores received checks each week. The entire process was contactless. And while the dollar amounts varied, 45 businesses received money as part of the program. The gift certificates do not expire. This was done intentionally to help stores balance the demand and hopefully stagger and increase foot traffic.

Main Street Executive Director Jordan Nordby said the nature of the LIVE! sales has changed in scope since stores have reopened. The focus has been on attracting new people, giving them a sneak peek at new merchandise so that they can come into the store; whereas during the lockdown curbside pickup and delivery was the end goal.

The next event is scheduled for July 20 and will be at Zodica Perfumery and will include kits for people to try workshops out in their house. On July 23, Max’s Threads’ new space and merchandise will be highlighted. Nordby stated that plans are already underway to continue the virtual shopping during the Christmas season.
