Lafayette County Historical Society to present on Hamilton

DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Historical Society will have a presentation on Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first Secretary of Treasury, at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Lafayette County Historical Society Museum, 525 North Main St., Darlington. Enter using the side door to the lower level.

Janette Hartman will give a presentation that will include Emma Rodolf's family journey in 1832 from Switzerland to the Fever River area in what is now Lafayette County, along with her connection to Hamilton, Garrison, the Rodolf family from Switzerland and the three Gratiot brothers. Their impact on the Rodolf family as well as the communities surrounding the Pecatonica are noted in the book "Peck-A-Ton-Oka" by Erwin Wetzel-Richli.

Rodolf's middle son, Franz Samuel Rodolf, was an artist and is known for painting landscapes of Lafayette County and Mineral Point during the 1830s. Some of his artwork is on display at the Wisconsin Historical Museum in Madison. A few copies will be available to view at the meeting.

Hartman is knowledgeable of the early history of southwestern Wisconsin and has been a curator/museum administrator and manager/leader of the Iowa County Wisconsin Historical Society Museum in Dodgeville. She has also been a tour guide, historical artifacts cleaner and demonstrator at Pendarvis in Mineral Point.
