MONROE - The Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, Monroe Women Educators, has received a state grant of $400 from the Barbara Beetow Account funds to give to the non-profit Fowler Memorial Free Dental Clinic of Green County.

The clinic sees children age 3 to 12 who are uninsured or under insured and low income, but it is in the process of expanding to see adults in the next year or two. It has only one dental chair and the patients are cared for by volunteer dentists, assistants and hygienists. There are eleven other non-clinical volunteers that support the clinic's operation. At the present time the clinic is open five to seven days per month. It has patients getting dental X-rays at other dentist offices and rotates the use of the one dental chair among all the professional volunteers. In the future, the clinic hopes to have more dental chairs, more dental volunteers such as dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists, and have its own X-ray equipment.

The clinic is funded by grants, donations, fundraisers, including a direct mail campaign.

It saw 331 unduplicated patients from its opening April 3, 2009 to Nov. 30, 2010. Including duplicated services, that number is 682 patients) such as exams, x-rays, pulpotomies, fillings, cleanings, extractions, sealants, fluoride varnish, and crowns. Eleven towns are included in those served from Green County.

Education is a major part of the program.

The clinic uses a 30-day calendar for encouraging and tracking the children brushing and flossing their teeth and provides them with a sticker that is put on the chart each time these are done. When the calendar is filled, a free pizza certificate is earned which has been donated by Pizza Hut.
