GCGS plans meeting March 2
Monroe Library

MONROE — Mark Peterson will explain the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the Green County Genealogical Society’s 10 a.m. March 2 meeting in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library. Learn about the public relief program in the U.S. for unemployed, unmarried men ages 17-28.

The CCCs was the most popular of the New Deal programs and led to greater public awareness and appreciation of the outdoors and the nation’s natural resources. Enrollees planted nearly 3 billion trees and constructed trails, lodges, and related facilities in more than 800 parks nationwide among other tasks.

Refreshments are available for 15 minutes before the meeting. Meetings are free and open to the public. Call Sharon Mitchell, 815-868-2416, or Donna Kjendlie, 608-921-1537, with questions. Leave a message if no answer.

The Research Center is available for limited research. Call ahead to see if materials are available. There is still reorganization left to do after the remodeling.
