MONROE - Richard Hager of the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe will speak on "Writing Your Own Obituary and Interesting Tidbits from Old Obituaries," at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 in the upper level of the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave., Monroe.
Hager has an interest in what the older obituaries mention for a historical and social value as well as entertainment value for those interested in family history.
He will share some of the old records that have been retained by the funeral home from the 1860s, including pricing of horse-drawn hearses and cause of death.
While some may think this a morbid subject, it holds many unknown items of interest to the genealogist.
Hager will also bring helpful ideas on how to write your own obituary so that the information will be correct instead of relying on your descendants who may be too upset to remember what to say.
The program is designed to appeal to those interested in history, genealogy or the social aspect in earlier times and how it has changed with the addition of newer technology.
The research center will then be open from 1 to 3 p.m. in the afternoon.
