MONROE - Members of the local Col. Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored some of the DAR Good Citizen Award winners from area high schools with a luncheon and presentation of awards March 10 at Pizza Hut.

The DAR award is based on recommendation of the guidance office of each area high school and considers grades, attitude, community service and involvement in activities. The students also may write an essay on a question of national significance that relates current events to American history. The essay is written without references and is submitted to a panel of judges. The winner of the essay contest from each chapter is submitted at the state level. State winners are considered in the national contest for scholarship awards.

The local DAR Good Citizen Award recipients for 2018 are: Morgan Tresemer, Brodhead High School; Hailey Kammerer, Juda High School; Hailey Stefanik, Albany High School; Preston Bousley, Cuba City High School; Lauren Schultz, Black Hawk High School; Owen Thronson, Pecatonica High School; Kenneth Jackson Hemming, Darlington High School; and Brianna Leahy, Shullsburg High School.

The winner of this year's essay contest was Morgan Tresemer of Brodhead High School. In addition to her certificate, pin and card, she was awarded $100 from the chapter toward her future education.
