JANESVILLE - Plans for college expansion in Beloit were approved at the regularly scheduled Jan. 21 meeting of the Blackhawk Technical District Board of Directors. The approval followed several months of study and negotiation involving a number of prospective sites.

The Beloit Center of Blackhawk Technical College will be comprised of approximately 15,000 square feet of leased space at the Eclipse Center on Riverside Drive in Beloit, 5 miles from the central campus. The college will invest approximately $750,000 in improvements to the Eclipse Center over a 10-year period, in addition to annual operating costs. Construction is anticipated to begin spring 2009, with occupancy slated for Aug. 1. The developer is Beloit Properties, Inc.

Programming envisioned to be provided at the Beloit Center includes healthcare professions, computer technology, adult basic education (GED/HSED and ELL), general education, community education and courses targeted to assist students to transition to programs at Central Campus. Two computer labs and a health sciences classroom will be available for instruction.

Dr. Eric A. Larson, BTC President, explained the choice of site.

"Blackhawk Technical College is very pleased to be continuing its commitment to the residents of the City of Beloit and surrounding area by reestablishing our Beloit Learning Center at the Eclipse Center. This is a perfect location for BTC as we are in close proximity to the new Beloit Public Library, the School District of Beloit's Automotive Program, and other institutions of higher education. The new facility will include dedicated space for health-related programs, computer classroom/labs, and a multi-purpose room for community and continuing education programming," he said.

"We are very excited about being able to serve the Beloit community with a fuller complement of programming. With this Center, we believe we can better serve recent graduates from Beloit Memorial High School and persons in the community who have recently lost their jobs," Dr. Sharon Kennedy, Vice President of Learning, added.
