Brooklyn historical society to hold event

BROOKLYN - Brooklyn Area Historical Society will host its fifth annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Brooklyn Community building. The theme this year is "Dancing into the Past."

The society transferred a reel-to-reel film of Brooklyn prom dances from 1954-62 to a DVD and will be showing it at the open house. There will be DVD copies for sale. The film was reorganized in sequence, identified the themes and kings/queens and added some rare footage of the original Brooklyn high and elementary schools found on the film.

During the event, members will assist those who attend to research their family's past using various archive databases.

This year's guest speaker is Mark Hanson, who will present the restoration process of the Rutland Center Church, circa 1911, and its history. This structure is located at 4528 Rome Corners Road. Information and displays on the society's outreach program with the Brooklyn Elementary School and other historical artifacts acquired in the past year will be available.

There will be gift certificates and information on membership available. The new revised "Brooklyn Historical History" brochure compiled by the society members will be for sale.

The society is also trying to develop a Brooklyn school alumni (and descendants) yearly reunion during the open house.

In October of 2010, a group gathered to explore the possibility of forming a local historical society. The first historical society for Brooklyn formed in April 2011 and applied for and received affiliation with the Wisconsin State Historical Society. The goal of the society is to preserve the history of the Village of Brooklyn and the four surrounding townships of Brooklyn, Oregon, Rutland and Union.

The board of directors is: Susan McCallum, president; LaVorn Dvorak, vice president; Mark George, secretary; Renae Hanson, treasurer; and Ann Wanless, board member at large (cataloguing).
