MONROE — Two members of the Behling family with roots in Green County recently graduated. Both Evelyn and Amy were recipients of the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago Scholarship for their first years of undergraduate studies. Amy wrote a family history in 1997 that is held at the Museum of Cheesemaking. At the time 55 copies were distributed to family.
Evelyn is the great-granddaughter of Swiss cheesemaker Karl Julius Niedermann and accountant Anna Marie Bruggmann. They came to Green County with four other relatives from Switzerland. Evelyn Behling earned her Master of Arts in Political Science from Notre Dame University on May 20, 2023. She has spent summers studying in Italy, Washington D.C., and New York City. She is continuing studies toward her doctorate to be a professor. Evelyn earned grant funding to study Ancient Greek this summer.
Amy Jo Behling earned her Certificate in Digital Marketing through UW-Madison’s College of Engineering after nine months of intensive boot camp covering 13 courses with 26 professors. She is a member of the Monroe Chamber with Scout & Cellar Wine part-time and is seeking work in marketing. Amy has been singing shows in retirement facilities professionally and is a member of Swiss Singers for the past four years. She also volunteers with the line dance group Friends of Dance at The Moose and performs for senior facilities. Amy attended Illini Girls State in the past and just joined the American Legion. They are both on Linkedin.
Amy’s father graduated from Blanchardville High School. Grandmother Anna’s first cousin was Swiss Ambassador to the U.S. during WWII and afterward, Charles Bruggmann who at one point in time visited New Glarus.
