FREEPORT - The Stephenson County Beef Association and Rock River Valley Blood Center's Freeport Donor Center are recognizing National Beef Month and will be offering product samples to donors beginning May 1 and going until supplies are gone.

The donor center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and from 7 to 11 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at 461 E. South St., across from Cimino's. Donors will receive a prepackaged beef stick after donating. Beef is considered a great source of iron and protein and may be recommended to increase red blood cell and iron levels in some people.

The most common reason people can't donate blood is because of a low hemoglobin, or volume of red blood cells. Beef is a good source of iron, and this is a small way to thank donors and help promote the Stephenson County Beef Association and Beef Month.

Donating blood is safe and simple. Donors should be at least 17 years old (16-year-olds may donate with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Persons taking medications are not necessarily disqualified.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center serves as a centralized, community blood center and is the only provider of blood products and services to Beloit Health System, Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, FHN, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rochelle Community Hospital, Mercyhealth Hospital-Rockton Avenue, SwedishAmerican Health System and SwedishAmerican Medical Center-Belvidere.

For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, call toll free 877-RRVBC-99 or find RRVBC on the web at www.rrvbc.org.
