BBBS mentoring program to resume

MONTICELLO - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Green County school mentoring program begins in Monticello after a two year break. United Way is increasing funding to BBBS this year to help support the program.

Program Manager Trina Werner and Guidance Counselor Ruth Voight are in charge of recruiting participants. They are seeking elementary students who could benefit from help with homework and from having a mature friend. Parents must complete an application for their child and send it to school.

Elementary students are matched with high school mentors. Matches meet on school property and work on homework together, play games and do seasonal puzzles. The program is designed to improve school behaviors and social skills and help children reach their potential. Werner says, "Once children get to know their mentor, they can't wait for the next meeting."

Mentors are high school students interviewed by Werner. There are currently six high school student volunteers waiting to be matched with Little Brothers or Little Sisters. New Big Sister Amanda Ball writes on her application, "I have been waiting for this opportunity to come to our town."

Funding may be sent to BBBS, 1505 Ninth Street, Monroe, WI 53566.
