MONROE - Turner Hall of Monroe's annual Christkindlmarkt, based on the historic and traditional Christmas markets of Germany, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Grand Hall.

Monroe's celebration of Christkindlmarkt began in 1998; this is the 18th time Turner Hall has held the market. Part of Turner Hall's annual Swiss Heritage Series line-up, the two-day holiday market features the work of select artisans and crafters, with hand-crafted gifts. Shoppers will find a variety of home, personal and Christmas items, including Old World European folk art such as Scherenschnitte or scissor cuttings, Kerbschnitte, which is chip-carving in wood, or wood-carvings known as Holzschnitte. The Monroe Swiss Singers have baked Swiss specialties, including Bratzeli cookies, Zopf braided bread and Spitzbuben cookies.

Samichlaus, Switzerland's version of St. Nick, will make appearances at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. both days of the market. Schmutzli, Samichlaus' gloomy partner from the Black Forest, also will be on hand to make sure children haven't been too naughty during the year.

Shoppers can relax with traditional Gluhwein, a hot spiced wine, and a Swiss treat or dine in the lower level Ratskeller Restaurant, which will be serving from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days.

Located at 1217 17th Ave., two blocks south of the Square, the Swiss Emmental-style chalet is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places and is handicapped-accessible.
