NEW GLARUS - Julian Russell Elmer, age 91, of New Glarus passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on July 30, 1922 in the Town of New Glarus the son of Julius and Cora (Jordi) Elmer. Julian was a 1939 graduate of New Glarus High School. He farmed until 1947 when his brother Arthur returned from WWII. The two brothers then owned and operated Elmer Brothers Trucking until 1977. Julian married Mardell Christen on July 10, 1947; they had two daughters Bonnie and Julie. Julian was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus and served on the Church Consistory and cemetery committee. He was also a member and past master of the New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, member of the directors staff of the Zor Shrine, and member of the 32nd degree. Julian was also a charter member of the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club.
Julian is survived by his wife Mardell of New Glarus, daughters Bonnie (Jack) Roberts of New Glarus and Julie (Michael) Bear of Greenwich, CT, grandchildren Michael (Cindy) Roberts of Austin, TX, Nicole Velaj of Greenwich, CT, Sydney, Hannah, and Samantha Bear of Greenwich, CT. He is further survived by five great-grandchildren Jack, Benjamin, and Clara Roberts and Grace and Caroline Velaj, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Herbert and Arthur, sisters Kathryn Soper and Florence Elmer.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the New Glarus Home Chapel, 600 Second Ave., New Glarus, WI (access via the Elm Dr. entrance), with Pastor Petra Streiff officiating.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the New Glarus Home Chapel.
A memorial fund has been established.
