Gladys M. Ziltener, age 95 of Monroe, formerly of Madison, died peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Azura Memory Care with her family by her side. Gladys was born June 27, 1918 in Conde, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Dietrich) Peter. She graduated from the State College of Agriculture in Brookings, S.D. and Brown's Business College in Freeport. Gladys married Herman Ziltener on May 19, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple farmed on the Ziltener home farm in Spring Grove Township. After Herman's death on August 10, 1978, Gladys moved to Monroe and later to Madison. Gladys was a 4-H project leader for many years and her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting and crafts. She especially enjoyed traveling, playing cards, bowling, and golfing. She had fond memories of dancing at Bluff View Park.
She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie (Gerald) Rowe of Darlington; her son, Larry (Marci) Ziltener of Monroe; 6 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Edna Schuetz of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Helen Domek of Madison; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Eugene DeYoung of Madison. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Roy and Floyd Peter; sister, Dora Burkhalter; brothers-in-law, Karl Burkhalter and William Schuetz; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Goldie Peter.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at 11:30 A.M., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, with Rev. Randy Booth officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
