Celebrating Our Past
Celebrating Our Past
The Fairview Cheese Factory, located in Clarno Township - Section 15 - was located near the current Bethel and Melvin roads intersection. The factory produced primarily Swiss cheese until its closing in 1970. Cheesemakers throughout the tenure of the factory were Leo Von Moos, Emil Escher, Herman Christian Sr. and Herman Christian Jr. The 1942 photograph of the Fairview Cheese Factory was shared with the National Historic Cheesemaking Center by Nancy Signer of Monroe. Green County was home to more than 300 cheese factories, many of which National Historic Cheesemaking Center has no information or photographs of. Also needed are historical photos of factories from the entire state and/or nation. To assist in completing the history of cheesemaking, please contact us with any information or photographs you may have. Questions or comments may be directed to Mary Ann Hanna at 608-325-4324 or nhcchistory@yahoo.com. (Photo supplied by the National Historic Cheesemaking Center)
