Shed Fire on Pond View Road
Shed Fire on Pond View Road
Crews work Monday morning to extinguish a fire that destroyed a storage shed on Pond View Road. The shed was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Owner George Mau said he has owned the building since 1991 and used it to store collectibles he has been accumulating for almost 60 years, including several vehicles, a camper, a tractor, about 10 motorcycles, kayaks and numerous antique tools. Mau said he had always been extra careful to prevent any fire hazards. "It was the last thing I thought would ever happen," Mau said. "A tornado, yeah, sure it's possible, but never a fire with me out and around." Mau had just put away his mowing tractor and was away for 15 minutes when he saw the smoke. Joel Tertin, who lives nearby, said he was planting tomatoes when he heard a couple of explosions. The wind was blowing the opposite direction of Tertin"s home. "It's a good thing the wind's blowing the right way," he said. Deputy Chief Lane Heins of the Monroe Fire Department said it was a "wind-driven" fire, which made it more difficult for area firefighters to keep the flames under control. The water supply was also a problem because of the rural location. Heins said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and that "the building and contents were a total loss." Fire departments from Monroe, Browntown, Juda and Monticello responded. The Wisconsin State Patrol and Green County Sheriff were also on the scene to assist. (Times photo: Marissa Weiher)
